Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show Skyscraper-studded Frankfurt - with so much commerce it’s nicknamed “Bankfurt” - has a delightful-to-explore old center. We'll also visit Nürnberg, a capital for both the First Reich (the Holy Roman Empire) and the Third. From its towering castle and playful fountains to its Nazi Documentation Center and maze of underground bomb shelters, Nürnberg is a fascinating study in contrasts.

It's a shame they are replicas and not original medieval structures like there are in Quedlinburg and Goslar. These cities are like the German Epcot from Disney World. Frankfurt has very ugly modern architecture with a non-descript skyline like a bland American city.

Germany’s rich now, they were received money to rebuild It’s cities and economy after ww2. Now they should pay Poland for destroyed 93% of Warsaw - and many other cities whilst killing 1/4 of It’s population.

Dürer was pretty clever. Maybe he wanted his initials, just like he had seen in Italy, but worried the churches would claim heresy, so he told them "it stands for anno domini" even though he knew it didn't ;)

About Frankfurt in Hessia: In this region one of the most famous songs is "Stop! Erbarme, zu spät, die Hesse komme". in English: "Stop! Have mercy, the Hessians are coming" Neraby Offenbach has been nicknamed "Frankfurt Bronx" by the way. The most intersting cultural event is four times per year the Stadtgeläut, where all city churches ring all their bells for half an hour.
Nürnberg is the capital of ther region of Franken(Franconia) that is sometimes described like this "Man muss dem Herrn für alles danken, auch für Ober-, Mittel-, Unterfranken" In English: "You have to give thanks to the LORD for everything, even for Upper, Middle and Lower Franconia". The most interesting food is high quality Lebkuchen (Gingerbread).
In Franconia they are not always happy to be a part of Bavaria. So they say: "Ohne Franken muss Bayern wanken". In English: "Without Franconia Bayern must stagger"

If this is not enough to wake you up and try to do it better, I don't know what else could. ^^ As a german, I'm not a fan of doing the same error twice. Not efficent. ;)

With the exception of Russia, the countries of Europe are not all very large, which is the case when many peoples have to share the space. By the way, Germany has 84 times as many people as Montana. By the way, the whole of Europe is somewhat larger than the USA, but there are two and a half times as many people living here.

Frankfurt was a great place. However, I wouldn't return as the city is spoiled by Eastern European beggars on most corners and Middle Eastern/African groups of males loitering around the railway station at all hours.Very intimidating walking past them with my luggage getting to my hotel. I was stationed in Germany from 1978-1981. The last time I went to Germany was in 1991. It is totally different today. The Germans did a massive reconstruction of Germany after the East & West reunited. The best year to travel Europe was in 1983. I was stationed in Italy at that time. That was the year the dollar was very strong and a lot of people in the U.S. were getting passports that there was a long ling in the passport office. Never again did the dollar was that big.
